Zaragoza volunteers celebrate their big day with Fernando Arcega as a new godfather

The Luis Galve room of the auditorium of Saragossa This Saturday has hosted the traditional Gala of the Day of Municipal Volunteering, an act with which the city recognizes the altruistic and selfless work of the body of Zaragoza volunteers. This year, the new godfather will be the former basketball player of the Spanish team Fernando Arcega, who takes over from humorist Miki Nadal.

The Minister of Participation and Internal Regime, Alfonso Mendoza, the Minister of Social Policies, Marian Orós, and other councilors of the Municipal Corporation participated in the event. The celebration has been framed, as every June 14, on the anniversary of the 2008 International Exhibition, origin of the volunteer body.

The mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia ChuecaHe has not been able to attend for agenda reasons, but has sent a video with a message of congratulations and thanks. “Thanks from the heart, you are the soul of our city and this year 2024 you have demonstrated it once again. The body has grown strongly, adding 226 new additions, 30% more than last year,” he said.

Chueca has highlighted the key role played by volunteers in the day -to -day life of the Aragonese capital. “Zaragoza is today a city in full transformation, full of exciting projects, and is a city that recognizes those who make it even bigger with its selfless commitment,” he said. “You are our best ambassadors and our best presentation card,” he added.

More than 2,200 active volunteers in the city

Currently, the Zaragoza Volunteer Corps has 2,200 assets and 5,175 registered people. Only in 2024 have participated in 226 activities. So far this mandate, 443 new candidates have been added, with a high percentage of young people: 126 are under 25 years.

The advisor Alfonso Mendoza has valued his involvement: “I do not remember any action that has been proposed to what they have said. On the contrary, they are always willing,” he said, thanking for his “full dedication” and “altruistic” collaboration.

The gala has been presented by the communicator Javier Segarra and has included the official appointment of Fernando Arcega as godfather.

New space in the house of the Morlanes

One of the announced novelties has been the authorization of a new space in the House of Morlanes, where the volunteer office is now located. The objective has been to address one of the requests of the collective, offering a broader and more accessible headquarters.

Programs such as “Parks with Heart” have also been promoted from the citizen participation area, which promotes physical exercise in group in green areas, or “museums +60”, a cultural project that promotes intergenerational dialogue through municipal collections.

In addition, the Training Plan has been reinforced with courses in first aid, digital skills and protocol, expanding the tools with which volunteers collaborate in the improvement of community life.
