The DGT updates the official signal catalog: what changes on Spanish roads
As of July 1, traffic signals change in Spain. The Government has approved a reform that updates the official catalog for the first time in more than 20 years, incorporating new symbols, indications for electric scooters and a clear commitment to sustainability and inclusive visual language.
The DGT gives up to 2,000 euros and 2 card points if you meet these requirements
The idea is simple: that the signals are clearer, understandable and adapted to how we move today. And although the rule comes into force in July, the substitution will be progressive and will not immediately affect the theoretical conductor exams.

New mobility modes, new signals
One of the great novelties is the incorporation of specific signals for personal mobility vehicles (VMP), such as electric scooters. Indications on school zones are also added, spaces frequented by older people or shared roads between pedestrians, cyclists and cars, which is known as “coexistence areas.”

Some of the new signs that appear in the official catalog are:
R-118: Prohibits the entry of personal mobility vehicles
R-120: Restricts access according to environmental badge
S-47: Brand pedestrian priority zones
S-105e: Indicates electric recharge stations
S-991G: speed control alert with drone or helicopter

Redesign of pictograms and more visual clarity
The new catalog not only adds signals: it also redesign the existing ones. Pictograms such as animals, level steps or bicycles have modernized to be easier to understand with the naked eye, especially in low visibility conditions.
The DGT confirms its error margins in the radars: so you can get rid of a fine
In addition, disuse signals have been eliminated and sizes for more efficient manufacturing have been adjusted, allowing costs and improving sustainability.

An important aspect is that gender connotations have been eliminated in symbology, betting on a more inclusive visual language in all signage.
Progressive change and without immediate effect on exams
Although the reform enters into force on July 1, the new signals will be installed gradually, coinciding with the usual renovation cycles to avoid extra costs. Obsolete signals must be withdrawn before July 1, 2026 for legal certainty reasons.
The DGT denounces almost 620 drivers every hour
As for road formation, the changes will not be incorporated immediately in the theoretical exams. There will be a minimum margin of three months to update the manuals and that future drivers can prepare properly.
