Aragon promotes the recovery of the medieval town of Montañana as a new tourist destination
The government of Aragon This Thursday has signed an agreement with several institutions to give a new impulse to the recovery of the Historic Ensemble of Montañana, a medieval core declared of Cultural Interest and located in the municipality of Puente de Montañana, in the region of La Ribagorza (Huesca). The objective: rehabilitate its valuable heritage and turn it into a reference of cultural tourism in the Pyrenees.
The protocol has been signed by the regional executive, the Provincial Council of Huesca, the Region of Ribagorza, the City of Puente de Montañana, the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón and the Ibercaja Foundation. Through this commitment, entities undertake to design a joint strategy that allows to conserve and value this unique enclave, acting both in the rehabilitation of their constructions and in the improvement of infrastructure, tourist equipment and promotion campaigns.
A roadmap for your future
The agreement constitutes the first step to elaborate a strategic plan that serves as a road map for the coming years. The planned actions will seek a balance between tourism development and heritage conservation, incorporating innovative sustainability, digitalization and communication criteria. As explained during the firm, the challenge is to make Medieval Montañana a modern destination model, but respectful of their historical essence.
In recent years, this picturesque enclave had already been the subject of several restoration actions, many of them promoted by the Medieval Montañana Foundation, which will be dissolved soon. With this new institutional impulse, it is intended to provide the project with a solid base and with financing that ensures its viability as an economic engine for the entire region.
The signature of the protocol has been carried out in the Church of the medieval core itself, with the participation of the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Manuel Blasco; the president of the Diputación de Huesca, Isaac Claver; the regional president, Roque Vicente; the mayor of Puente de Montañana, Jorge Bordes; The vicar of the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón, Ángel Noguero, and the representative of Fundación Ibercaja, Roberto Cerdán. The agreement also opens the door to the incorporation of other public or private entities that want to join the project.
