Aragon, one of the most wanted destinations to see the total eclipse
The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 has caused an authentic boom in rural tourism reserves, especially in areas that will remain under the visibility strip of the phenomenon. According to data from Airbnb, rural accommodation searches on the Eclipse route have increased 830% compared to last year, with Aragon Among the communities with greater demand.
Locations like Teruel, Huesca, Ariza, Aliaga, Daroca or Arcos de las Salinas appear among the eleven most wanted rural destinations for that week, both by Spanish and international visitors. In total, the Eclipse route will cross communities such as Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, and will involve an injection of tourist activity for municipalities that, in many cases, do not have hotels but of accommodations managed by hosts on platforms such as Airbnb.
With about 75% of rural peoples without a hotel infrastructure, accommodation between individuals is emerging as the main route to welcome the thousands of travelers who will be attracted to this unique event, which has not been seen in Spain In more than a century. The platform highlights that, in these municipalities, the offer of rural housing multiplies by 40 that of hotel squares.
In addition, Airbnb has announced a collaboration with the Starlight Foundation, which has donated $ 35,000 to develop training programs in astrotourism and sustainability. The objective is to train hosts and promote a responsible tourist model, which combines the positive economic impact with the protection of the night sky as a natural heritage.
The expectation for this eclipse, which will mark the beginning of a succession of three consecutive astronomical events in 2026, 2027 and 2028, known as the “Iberian trio”, is also reflected in the profile of travelers: international tourists, especially of the United States and the United Kingdom, lead the growth of reserves, followed by Spaniards, French, German, Dutch and Italians.
According to an AFI report, in 2024, travelers housed in short -lived rentals in municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants generated more than 5.5 billion euros in direct spending, and the foreign visitor spends almost three times more than the national, which translates into a real impulse for local trade, small businesses and freelancers of the rural environment.
