On September 24, it will officially open CanfrancPyrenees the third unified edition of World Championship of Mountain & Trail Running, with the presence of 1,700 athletes from 80 countries, the highest participation figure in its history. In total, five modalities will be played:
In the absence of two months for the inauguration of the World Championship, we work thoroughly in the last details of the organization both in the sports field and in the one related to logistics, which is a real challenge for Canfranc, a town that barely exceeds 600 inhabitants. Everyone will be pending from September 24 to 28 of this small Spanish town of the Aragonese Pyrenees, known worldwide for its iconic railway station.
Lord Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, predicts that this championship, which will bring together the best off -road corridors in the world, will be “a real world celebration of resistance, resilience and unity in one of the most dynamic and demanding running disciplines”.

In this sense, he is convinced that “Canfranc, with its spectacular Pyrenean landscape and its rich history, is a place that captures the spirit of this sport. It stands as a symbol of resistance, exploration and connection, becoming the perfect headquarters for these championships in 2025”.
COE points out that the Canfranc World Cup is going to be a reflection of the impressive boom in popularity that are experiencing mountain and trail running races, which has allowed it to quickly become “a global movement that unites various communities through a passion shared by nature, adventure and competition, attracting some of the most impressive and rugged landscapes of the world both to the world fans ”.
The words of Pilar Alegría
In this same line, the Minister of Education, Professional Training and Sports of Spain, Pilar Alegría, who knows very well the territory that will house the World Championship is expressed. “It represents a unique opportunity to internationally project the Aragonese Pyrenees and to consolidate this area as one of the great natural scenarios of outdoor sport,” he said.
The Spanish Minister of Sports considers that Canfrancpirineos 2025 will be a showcase for this border territory of northern Spain, because “it will announce the tourist, economic and environmental potential of the Aragonese Pyrenees, with a model that combines sports and organizational excellence, respect for the environment and the promotion of rural environment.”
The World Championship is organized under the supervision of World Athletics and the collaboration of World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), International Trail Running Association (ITRA), International Association of Ultrarunners (IA), and the Spanish Realfederation of Athletics (RFEA). It also has the support of the Superior Sports Council (CSD), Government of Aragon, Provincial Council of Huesca (DPH) and Canfranc City Council.
