New improvement works in the surroundings of Zaragoza: affect the A-2 in the connection with the Z-40

Jul 24, 2025

The Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility has begun this Friday the works to improve road safety at kilometer 313 of the A-2, in its connection with the Z-40 in the sense Barcelona, on the outskirts of Zaragoza. The works, which are framed in the conservation contract of the Calatayud-Alfajarín section of the highway, involve an investment of 741,122 euros and will force to cut the road for two consecutive weekends.

As reported by the Ministry itself, the intervention will be extended between kilometers 313 and 314 in an increasing sense (Barcelona), where the median and the final rolling layer will be extended, in addition to the final horizontal signage. To execute these works, it will be necessary to completely occupy the road in some sections, so two phases of deviations have been programmed that will be applied exclusively during the weekend to minimize traffic conditions.

First cut: July 18 to 20

The first phase has started this Friday, July 18 at 9:00 p.m. and will last until 4 pm on Sunday. During that period, the A-2 road will be cut in Barcelona from the confluence with the Z-40 (km 32,400 of the southern round) to km 317.3. Access will also close from Manuel Rodríguez Ayuso Avenue to the A-2 in that same direction.

As alternatives, traffic will be diverted to link 310 and from there it will redirect to the A-2. In addition, the DGT will report these deviations through variable message panels and routes will be enabled for the change of meaning at exit 320, facilitating access to destinations such as Logroño, Pamplona, Huesca or Barcelona.

Second cut: July 25 to 28

The second phase will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday 25 and will run until 5.00 on Monday, July 28. In this case, the cut will affect the section between kilometers 311.2 and 317.3 of the A-2, also in Barcelona. The traffic will be diverted by departure 311A to the Z-40, A-23 (Teruel) and A-68 (Alcañiz-Castellón), and the access will also be closed from the 310 link (Plaza/Airport/Zaragoza Fair).

The Ministry has planned a battery of alternative routes that includes departure 31 of the Z-40 for vehicles to Logroño, Pamplona or Vía Hispanidad, as well as specific signage to Santa Isabel from the Z-40 to redirect traffic to the A-2. All deviations will be properly marked and will be supported with early information through the panel network of the General Traffic Directorate.

Objective: Avoid “trap” sections at the confluence

The section in which it acts is one of the most conflicting of the Zaragoza road network, especially for the cross-linking between vehicles that access from the Z-40 and those that circulate through the A-2. Currently, the Z-40 arrives with two lanes from the left and the A-2 does it from the right with three. One of the latter, from the old N-2, works as an acceleration lane, which generates braided and accident risks.

The projected solution proposes to maintain two lanes of each road at the point of confluence and expand the platform to the four lanes before reducing the left lane, avoiding conflicting additions. To do this, the median will be partially occupied with the aim of improving fluidity and reducing hazards without a work of great impact or permanent traffic conditions.

From the Ministry they have warned that, despite the planned measures, retentions are not ruled out at peak hours due to the high volume of traffic of this corridor. The intervention seeks to improve road security in one of the strategic accesses to Zaragoza in the west.
