Valencia Avenue is renewed: more trees, less cars and new pedestrian spaces

Jul 25, 2025

Saragossa It remains firm in its purpose of renewing its streets. It will do it through the reform of several of its most important roads, including Valencia Avenue. This Friday, at the Zaragoza government meeting, it has been permanently approved, after the concrete permissions of ADIF, the comprehensive reform project of this avenue, one of the main arteries of the city that is going to be transformed to provide it with new spaces for rest and enjoyment for its neighbors.

This project, which will soon be public tender, will involve an investment of 6.8 million euros and will have an execution period of 12 months. The works, depending on the administrative process, could begin at the end of 2025.

From the crossroads with Goya to Corona de Aragón street

The remodeling will cover the entire avenue, from the crossroads to Goya to Corona Street Aragon. In total, about 14,000 square meters that will be integrated and where a new wooded square with children’s games and banks will be created. This new space will be located at the confluence of Juan José Lorente and Fueros de Aragón streets, an area that is now occupied by cars, motorcycles and buses.

In addition, the intersection with Tomás Breton street will be amended to also expand that space and completely renew the game park that already exists. The new configuration of the avenue retains the current three lanes of circulation: two in a rise and one of low use for the urban bus, as until now. The novelty is that this bus lane will last to Goya Avenue, instead of deviating for Fueros de Aragón, releasing that space to create the new place.

Guarantees road safety

The new design gains space on sidewalks and above all takes into account road safety. That is why different measures have been incorporated that protect the pedestrian. Currently some sections of sidewalks are narrow and others are occupied by marques, posts or by the fence that protects pedestrians from the passage of bus and taxis. Instead, the new sidewalks will be more accessible and the pedestrian areas will be separated from the traffic lanes by a plant band that will travel the entire avenue. It will protect the sidewalks but also improve the environmental quality of the avenue.

All these green areas will be of shrub plants and not grass to reduce the consumption of irrigation water and create a plant mass that helps retain moisture, favor the development of a natural ecosystem that improves the control of pests and serves as protection of existing and new trees. In total 96 new trees will be planted.

All this will form a green axis next to which they will place banks in the shadow. The goal is for the street to be much friendlier, to invite you to be in it and not just pass, and thereby contribute to revitalize trade.

Two new pedestrian crossings

To improve road safety, two new pedestrian crossings are also incorporated to avoid crossing by non -enabled points. They will be located at number 24 and at the crossroads with Desiderio Escos street. In addition, light beacons will be installed in the steps of the bus lane, which will light when the sensors detect that the vehicle is approaching, warning the pedestrians of their presence.

The bike lane, on the other hand, moves to the other side of the street, next to the odd ones, and also improves their safety. It will run at the sidewalk level, but separated from both vehicles and pedestrians. This separation will be carried out through the splint of shrubs that runs most of the layout and the winding line.

The reform will also involve an important improvement in supplies networks. The drinking water supply pipes will be fully renewed, both arterial conduction one meter in diameter and distribution. The sanitation network and public lighting will also be replaced, which will improve lighting offering greater safety and efficiency thanks to LED technology.
