Pedro Cerbuna Street will not have a bike lane: the reform project prioritizes improving pedestrian mobility
The Pedro Cerbuna street reform project has been permanently approved, after exceeding the public information process. The reform has been ratified this Friday at the government meeting of Saragossa, and has a budget that amounts to 3,099,766.49 euros (VAT included) and with an execution period of 9 months. The works, whose bid Aragon, which supposes 570 meters in length and an area of 8,550 square meters.
The Minister of Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Energy and Housing, Víctor Serrano, has indicated that, despite the allegations that were presented for the creation of a bike lane, this will not be built. “After making the corresponding technical reports, we see that there are not enough square meters to be able to execute them without that assuming the neighbors lost sidewalk, and it is not the idea, because the first thing is the pedestrian,” he said.
Likewise, the counselor has assured that the construction of the bike lane “was not something pressing, because after all the campus of the San Francisco square has a bike lane in virtually all its surrounding streets.” Similarly, he has assured that he is going to work, together with the University of Zaragoza, to improve the connections between Pedro Cerbuna Street and San Francisco Square.
Improvement in pedestrian mobility
Serrano has indicated that this new project seeks to improve pedestrian mobility. There will be new plantations and green areas, the use and coexistence of bicycles and personal mobility vehicles will be enhanced, it will be gained in visual comfort with the new public lighting, and the subsoil networks will be renewed. Some works that, after overcoming administrative processes, could probably begin at the beginning of 2026.
The street of Pedro Cerbuna Linda with the University City of Zaragoza and has a large amount of activity by the educational community, causing numerous bars and other establishments in it. The great influx in the area, and more specifically to the terraces of the bars, causes in many occasions problems for pedestrian traffic in one of its sidewalks. Therefore, the modification in the street section with wider sidewalks and a more pleasant environment in it will improve the pedestrian traffic of this street.
It is the object of this project, therefore, define the road and mobility improvement of Pedro Cerbuna Street, as well as the renewal of its services, modifying its cross section. To improve mobility and create a friendlier urban space for the pedestrian, the sidewalks will be expanded and the planting of new trees will be made as well as the construction of landscaped bands in different sections. The street will also be provided with new furniture to create stagnant areas that serve to favor the interpersonal relationships of users.
Renewal of water supply networks
Specifically, a single circulation lane (such as the current one), 3.50 meters wide and sidewalks to different levels of approximately 6 meters wide with parking areas next to the sidewalk of the even numbers, although eliminating part of the squares to gain space for the pedestrian, is raised. Likewise, part of the supply and water sanitation networks will be renewed removing existing conduits. As for the public lighting installation, 6 -meter -high columns with luminaires with LED technology will be installed for its greater light and energy efficiency.
The project will affect the entire street of Pedro Cerbuna, as well as intersections with the streets Violante de Hungary, Domingo Miral, Andrés Giménez, Menéndez Pelayo, Corona de Aragón and the Plaza San Francisco. Throughout the layout, the project adapts to its dimensions and elements, so three different sections are drawn in its route.
