The historic cube that housed the Tourism Office for 30 years says goodbye to the Plaza del Pilar

Dust and rubble. This is the only thing left of the mythical “cube” that housed the tourism office for more than 30 years Saragossa In the Plaza del Pilar. From the early hour of this Monday, the machines have worked to collapse and remove how little he kept standing from the building. This former Tourism Office remained unused at the end of December of the year 2023, at which time Zaragoza City Council premiered the new office located a few meters further back, on Santiago Street, 22. A new “modern” installation that sought a “worthy” space where to receive the visitors of the city.

The disassembly of the old building gave the departure gun on July 16 when the glassware surrounding the main facade began and until this weekend the only thing that was kept standing was the structure of the emblematic building. The demolition, which was approved on June 26 by the Provincial Heritage Commission, aimed to enhance the open and monumental character of the square, after supposing a visual impediment.

The demolition is not limited only to the disappearance of the building. If not, in addition, waste management and waterproofing tasks of the intervened area will be included, following a detailed technical and safety plan.

The demolition has had a cost of 41,100 euros and has been carried out by the company Carmelo Lobera SL. Although the disassembly could be extended up to two months, they have finally been enough for less than 15 days to make this building disappear in 1991.
