Jul 28, 2025

The counselor of Education, Culture and sport of the government of Aragon, Tomasa Hernández, described as “demanding but realistic” the road map with which, starting Monday and during the next seven months, at the expense of the proposal from Catalonia, the analysis, disassembly and transfer of the wall paintings to the monastery of Sijena from the MNAC will be carried out. Up to 28 weeks ahead to end a dispute of decades and which, as explained from the DGA, will have the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 2 of the First Instance and Instruction of Huesca.

From the schedule, one of the first differences is extracted with the case of the goods of the Diocesan Museum of Lleida, which traveled back to the monastic complex in a truck in a process that lasted just one day. The transfer and delivery of the frescoes of the chapter room will last for a month, throughout the 25, 27, 28 of the Plan, by February 2026 if nothing twists.

The final operation is part of the “Project Execution” phase, which includes, from the fifth month (week 18), the disassembly of the facilities and parties integrated. The five arches of the chapter room will be extracted in the 19th weeks (first arch), 20 (second), 21 (third), 22 (fourth). 23 (fifth) and 24 the South Wall. These will travel in adapted packaging, which will be manufactured from weeks 19 to 25.

Everything is preceded by the drafting of projects and the respective tenders. This would take place in the weeks eight and nine (in this also the elaboration of administrative specifications) and the works would go to competition and would be awarded from ten to 17, that is, October and November, and the rest in December, January and February.

Analysis and documentation

The first phase, which starts on Monday, is called “previous documentation and essays.” The starting gun is to some requirements of the judicial order for the final execution, such as allowing access to technicians, but also the closure of rooms 16 and 17 of the MNAC and knowing the documentation related to the conditions of conservation of the paintings.

Thus, next week the first delivery of documents, collected and digitized over a month will take place, and the photogrammetric analysis and 3D scanning will start, which will also cover the next one. The following steps will be the characterization and material description (weeks and three), the planimetries (three and four), inspection in situ (four and five) and the cartography of the pathologies (five and six). In week seven, the first half -arcade disassembly trial and the second delivery of documentation will take place.
