Not all peoples can say that they have a legendary relationship with the witches, but this town in the region of the Jacetania Yeah. In this small corner of the Aragonese Pyrenees, the stories of Aquelarres, spells and secret meetings underground are part of the past … and also of the present because, according to tradition, the witches celebrated their rituals here.

This natural enclave, hidden under the skirt of the Pico Collarada, has been modeled for thousands of years by the action of water, giving rise to a surprising underground universe of stalactites, stalagmites, columns and calcareous formations of great beauty. His name, “Güixas”, means “witches” in Aragonés – it is not casual: for centuries, the cave was the scene of legends and superstitions related to those, pagan rites and wise women persecuted in the Middle Ages.

Visits start from the underground interpretation center, where an immersive tour begins that combines scientific dissemination and historical narration. There are explained the geological processes, the cavernícola fauna as bats and insects, and the magical symbolism attributed to this type of spaces is revived. It is a plan that captivates both curious and lovers of nature, archeology or hidden history.

The guided tour lasts approximately 45 minutes, with small groups and an itinerary that allows you to closely contemplate the most spectacular formations. The entrance costs 7 euros for adults and 6 euros for children, retirees or groups, and can be easily acquired through the Villanúa Tourism Website. During bridges, weekends and summer, it is advisable to reserve in advance, since the demand is high.

However, Villanúa also offers adventure activities, outdoor walks and postcard enclaves.

Old Town and Camino de Santiago

The old town of Villanúa retains the charm of the traditional towns of the Alto Aragon, with stone houses, slab roofs and alleys that invite the walk. The Church of San Esteban houses a Romanesque size of the twelfth century, and the old bridge of the eleventh century connects with old medieval routes. The whole environment transmits authenticity and tranquility.

Villanúa is also an important milestone of the Camino de Santiago Francés as it passes through Aragon. For centuries, thousands of pilgrims have crossed this town leaving legends, documents and art behind them. Today, many walkers stop here to rest, supply or enjoy one of the most beautiful sections on the road.

Prehistoric dolmens and routes

Located in a riverside forest, it offers an ideal environment to disconnect, release adrenaline and enjoy family or friends. It has zip lines, hanging catwalks, networks, tibetan bridges and platforms between trees at different levels of difficulty.

In addition, it includes proposals such as forest escape, guidance activities, minigolf, signposted routes, children’s games and picnic areas. A place where sports, game and environmental education are mixed.

The rates range from 10 to 18 euros according to the circuit. There are special prices for large groups, schools and families. The park opens in spring and summer, and it is advisable to reserve in advance. The experience lasts between 1 and 2 hours, although many visitors spend the full day.

Villanoir Festival

Every October, Villanúa becomes the epicenter of the suspense with Villanoir, the Black Gender Pyrenean Meeting. The contest offers activities for all audiences and seeks to bring literature, cinema and mystery to visitors. Includes talks, debates and meetings with recognized authors.

It is not only for fans of the black genre: there are also cinema, live music and children’s activities, in a participatory and cultural environment.

How to get to Villanúa

From Saragossa
It can be reached by car in approximately 2 hours by the A-23 and the N-330. On weekends there are progress buses from Zaragoza Central Station.

From Huesca
The road trip lasts 1 hour. Regular route: N-330 to Jaca and then to Villanúa.

From Teruel
The most practical option is to go to Zaragoza and then continue on the indicated route.
