The Ibercaja Romareda stadium draws “excellent” in energy efficiency and environment
The project of the new Ibercaja Romareda stadium has obtained the BREEAM sustainability certification is in the “Excellent” category, an international recognition that proves its design and construction under the highest standards of energy efficiency and environmental respect. This achievement meets one of the necessary requirements for Saragossa It is headquarters of the 2030 World Cup and endorses measures such as energy and water savings, responsible waste management and the improvement of biodiversity.
Society NEW ROMAREDA, promoter of the project, chose the Breeam label is because of its prestige and its adaptation to Spanish regulations, as well as their experience certifying European stadiums. Among the evaluated aspects include the responsible use of resources, the connectivity of the environment, the reduction of pollution and the commitment to more green environments. During the first work phases, more than 95% of the waste generated has been valued and a constant communication channel has been maintained with the neighborhood.
The stadium will incorporate improved thermal insulation
In terms of energy efficiency, the stadium will incorporate improved thermal insulation, optimized sun protections, an open geothermal system, on -demand ventilation with CO₂ control, high efficiency heat pumps, consumption monitoring and own photovoltaic production.
These measures will allow to reach a positive energy balance of +60 MWh per year. As for water, a 40-50% savings will be achieved thanks to efficient toilets, leak detection and reuse of the drainage of the pitch for irrigation.
Sustainability is also reflected in the vegetation cover of almost a thousand square meters, which will absorb 4 tons of annual co₂, as well as in the plantation of low water consumption species.
Mobility plan
A mobility plan is planned that includes bicycle parking, places for electric vehicles and the pedestrianization of the access square. The use of materials with low emissions of volatile organic compounds and ecological refrigerants (R290) will guarantee high interior air quality and zero NOX emissions.
In addition, the commitment to the circular economy is evidenced in the reuse of more than 9,000 seats of the old stadium in clubs in the region and in the responsible management of the materials used.
