Traditional grazing returns to the Somontano mountains to prevent fires
The Tourist Sustainability Plan Sabea Guara Somontano, in collaboration with SEO/BirdLife and Farmers and local farmers, promotes the recovery of an ancestral practice: extensive and controlled grazing as a tool to prevent fires in high -risk areas and favor the biodiversity of the territory.
Eight farmers already work in strategic areas of Alquézar, Adahuesca, Bierge, Colungo, Naval and Statilla, cleaning and grazing land to reduce fuel vegetation and keep in good condition firewall, roads and other infrastructures against fire. To facilitate their work, debrises are carried out, fences are installed and supplemental food is provided in times of scarcity.
In addition, the project contemplates the creation of perimeter orchards next to the urban nuclei as natural barriers against the flames. Currently, there are already twenty pre -selected plots and new agricultural models are studied that foster the local product.
The Minister of Tourism of the Somontano region, Pilar Slyda, points out that “we are finding a very positive response from the farmers and ranchers in the area. The experience of SEO/BirdLife is helping us to add to add to adding and plots to this project, which aims to protect our rich environment with little invasive measures that have demonstrated its effectiveness in other territories. to promote tourism as if doing more sustainable, always establishing the care of the environment as a central axis, and these actions are a good vehicle to achieve it. ”
