The best viewpoint of Teruel that does not come out in the guides: the Casa Barco, the secret that only the Turolenses know
Teruel From the heights it is not seen, it feels. Those who have been fortunate to ascend to one of their viewpoints know it: the city is transformed into Mudejar brick poetry, centenary roofs and modernism discreet. But there is an almost invisible corner for visitor, a viewpoint that only the Turolenses arrive who best know their city: the one next to the Casa Barco, in the middle of the Ensanche neighborhood.
The former owners of the House Solans will have their own street in Zaragoza
From there, Teruel’s soul is whole: the majestic tower of El Salvador, the elegant Blue-Grisacean tones seminar, the winding oval walk and the vegetable hug of the pines that surround the city. An intimate and authentic panorama that does not appear in the guides or in the maps Tourist.
From this point in the city an intimate and authentic panorama is observed
Located on the edge of the ravine of the station, this viewpoint remains outside the usual routes. Its proximity to a historic building of singular architecture, the Casa Barco, and its strategic elevation over the city make it a point of high landscape and symbolic value for Teruel.

An avant -garde building with a fingerprint in history
Built in 1934 by the engineer Juan José Gómez-Cordobés, Casa Barco is one of the most notable examples of architectural modernism in Aragon. Of three floors and 586 square meters, the building stands out for its design inspired by the maritime navigation lines. Curved railings and aerodynamic aesthetics have earned him the nickname of “boat”, both among the neighbors and among the scholars of local architectural heritage.

During the Spanish Civil War, and in particular during the battle of Teruel, the Casa Barco played a strategic role. It was occupied by both republican and rebel troops due to its dominant location on the ravine and its proximity to the train station. The building received artillery impacts but did not suffer structural cracks, which value the concrete resistance used in its construction. Inside, the short wave station of the Francoist side was installed, under the name of Radio Teruel.

The recognition that did not arrive
In 2009, the Teruel City Council came to study the change of name of Ronda Street of Liberation for the street of the Casa del Barco, within the measures provided by the Historical Memory Law. However, the proposal did not materialize.
Whatever the reason, it deserves the name because the street invites you to stop for urban memory and patrimonial story of Teruel.
