What to see in the Botanical Garden of Zaragoza
The garden houses an outstanding collection of more than 160 identified species, including maple, cicas, black sabinas and myrtos, in addition to a representation of Mediterranean and native flora. However, this figure will increase soon, since the reform contemplates the incorporation of new strategically distributed collections, especially of medicinal and aromatic plants, which will be the conductive thread of the new botanical design.
The remodeling of the Botanical Garden of the Grande Park will begin this fall
This thematic axis will not only beautify the environment, but will reinforce its educational and scientific function, thanks to the collaboration with the Official College of Pharmaceuticals of Zaragoza.
Central pond, historical banks and restored water channels
One of the most distinctive elements of the garden are its old banks decorated with tiles and historical advertising, which will be restored and relocated around the future central pond. This new space will work as a small natural agora, ideal for resting or performing activities, and will have renewed classic furniture and ornamental lighting that will also enhance the environment at night.
In addition, water channels will be renewed to ensure efficient and continuous circulation, which helps fight heat and attract local fauna. The emblematic water clock (Clepsidra) will continue to be one of the attraction points, fitting in this new narrative around the nature and well -being binomial.
More accessible tours and historical elements that remain
The road network will be redesigned to include accessible tours, podotactile pavement and level steps. The goal is for anyone to enjoy the garden without barriers.
Two key elements will also be kept: Clepsidra or water clock and the phenological station, essential to study the effects of climate change in vegetation.
A space with history … and possible new name
Although the current garden was consolidated in 1927, its origins date back to the 10th century, during the Andalusian stage, when a garden of these characteristics was located near the Aljafía. Its history has crossed moments of splendor and disappearance, highlighting the illustrated project of the 18th century, destroyed in the War of Independence.
During the nineteenth century, the doctor and botanist Florencio Ballarín promoted his recovery, although it was not until 1927 when the current garden was formally consolidated as a botanical space within the large park.
The current design, and name, is due to the landscaper Javier Winthuysen, who intervened in the park in 1924. Under its direction, the garden acquired a more defined layout and began to serve as a species acclimatization center for planting in other gardens of the city. However, a possible modification of the official name of the garden has been raised.
The College of Pharmacists of Zaragoza has proposed that Francisco Loscos Bernal be called Botanical Garden, in honor of the recognized Aragonese botanist of the nineteenth century. It has not yet been confirmed whether this change will be officially adopted, but the debate is still open.
