Azcón defends his delay after the flood: “I was at a wedding and I don’t have a falcon to return”
The president of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, has justified on Tuesday the three -day delay to go to the areas affected by the devastating floods of the Belchite field ensuring that it was “at a wedding more than 1,000 kilometers from the autonomous community” and that “it does not have a falcon to return”. His statements, offered in an interview in the Public Espejo program, have generated a remarkable political and social impact.

During his visit on Monday to several municipalities such as Azuara, Letux and Herrera de los Navarros, affected by the floods, Azcón was increasing by numerous neighbors who reproached him for his absence in the most critical moments. In Azuara, the cries and demands of urgent help marked the tone of the day. Many residents, visibly altered, questioned the delay of the regional president.

Azcón, on the other hand, tried to empathize with the pain of those affected: “When you have lost your home or memories, you have the right to get angry. Politicians must face, not running away,” he said.

The popular leader also pointed against the State Meteorology Agency (Aemet) for, in his opinion, not having been accurate enough with the alerts: “The forecasts should have been more realistic. The notice was orange, not red, and that influenced the answer,” he said, feeding the debate on whether the magnitude of the storm was underestimated.

Promise of aid
During his visit, the regional president announced that a millionaire aid package will be approved in the next Governing Council to cover the damage not assumed by insurance and attend the municipalities. “We are going to help recover normal in the affected municipalities as soon as possible,” he said.
The DPZ will allocate eight million euros to the areas affected by floods
Azcón also wanted to avoid analogies with the Dana de Valencia that left more than 200 fatal victims, describing as “insult to the Valencians” any comparison with what happened in Aragon.
