This is the oldest pastry in Zaragoza: more than 200 years, Egyptian decoration and delicious artisan sweets

In the center of Saragossa, next to Don Jaime I street, one of those jewels that seem stopped over time survives. Not due to lack of evolution, but for the opposite: because he has managed to preserve the best of the past. This is Pastry Fantoba, a Aragonese pastry classic that has been sweetening generations since 1856.

Its showcases hide authentic sweet works of art, many of them with more than a century of history: guirlache on stone of Calatorao, fruits of Aragon bathed one by one in chocolate, sighs of the Virgin, braids, confitted oranges, frosty violets … and all elaborated in her own workshop, as the tradition sends. Each sweet tells a story and each ingredient is chosen with care.

In addition to its products, the interior of the premises is another surprise: an Egyptian decoration that converts the visit into a unique experience, where art and pastry merge into a space that could be perfectly a small gallery. Not surprisingly, Antonin Carême himself, the great pastry chef of the nineteenth century, said the pastry was the main branch of architecture. And Fantoba is right.

Fantoba, Zaragoza’s pastry with Egyptian decoration

Founded in 1856, Pastery Fantoba proudly presumes being the oldest in Zaragoza. From his premises at number 21 of Don Jaime I Street, wars, fashions and modernities have resisted without giving up its essence. The first thing that attracts attention when crossing its door is its neoclassical and Egyptian aesthetics, with columns, ornaments and golden details that move to another era.

But beyond the visual, what keeps Fantoba’s flame alive is the pamper for his trade. Every day they make their sweets in their own work, following inherited recipes for generations. Customer service, the deep knowledge of the products and that air of solemnity that surrounds the place makes it a must for Zaragozans and tourists.

Fantoba’s specialties are authentic classic Aragonese pastry. The Guirlache, made on Calatorao stone with selected almonds, is one of its most iconic products. Also highlight the fruits of Aragon, made for more than 150 years with fruits confitted and covered with the best chocolate.

To these delights are added the sighs of the Virgin, made of meringue and butter; The braid of the Virgin, the oranges confithed, the frosty violets and the artisan nougat. In addition, they make custom cakes, chocolates, puff pastry and macarons. All with quality ingredients and a work philosophy that prioritizes crafts and authentic flavor.
