The sturgeon moon will illuminate the sky of Zaragoza: when and where to see this superluna

Aug 8, 2025

Saragossa It is prepared for one of the most impressive astronomical shows of the year: the sturgeon moon, a superluna that will reach its maximum point on August 9, 2025 at 9.55 hours. This phenomenon, which combines the full moon brightness with its maximum closeness to the earth, promises spectacular images for those who know where and when to look.

In the Aragonese capital and its surroundings, there will be privileged corners to enjoy it without the annoying light pollution. In addition, this August will not be the only gift from heaven: the 2025 lunar calendar brings with it other superlunas that will delight astronomy fans and photographers.

What is the sturgeon moon and why is it called that

The sturgeon moon is the traditional name that the American native tribes gave to the full moon of August. The reason was linked to fishing: during this month, great sturions were easier to capture. Today, the term remains as part of the cultural and astronomical tradition that surrounds the lunar calendar.

This 2025, the sturgeon moon will be special because it coincides with a superluna. This means that the moon will be at its closest to Earth, the so -called perigee, which will make it see up to 7% larger and 15% brighter than a normal full moon.

Where to see the sturgeon moon in Zaragoza

To appreciate all the beauty of the sturgeon moon, the ideal is to get away from the city’s lights. Places such as the Water Park, the Ebro Ribera in less enlightened sections or the Juslibol viewpoint are perfect to observe it in all its splendor. Also the outskirts, such as the open fields of the Cartuja or the surroundings of El Burgo de Ebro, offer cleaner skies.

Immortalize it in photography should carry tripod and camera with teleobjective, and plan the moment when the moon is low on the horizon, since it will look larger and with a very characteristic orange tone. Astronomy applications, such as Stellarium or Skysafari, can help calculate the exact position and the best time to capture it.

Other superlunas that will be seen this year

Sturgeon moon will not be the only astronomical appointment of 2025. Heaven will give us three more superloons:

-Muna of Harvest: September 7

-Luna hunter: October 7

-Luna de Castor: November 5

-Lune cold: December 5

All will coincide with lunar perigee, offering exceptional brightness and size. They are perfect dates to discover new places of observation in Zaragoza or plan escapes to environments with darker skies, such as the Pyrenees or Moncayo.
